How Liverpool could line up with David Alaba and fit Thiago next season

David Alaba scores incredible free-kick for Bayern Munich

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, with the Austrian international expected to leave the Bundesliga champions after negotiations over a new deal stalled. Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has effectively confirmed that Alaba will leave, saying: “Bayern did everything we could to try and reach an agreement.

“We had a lot of conversations, but we wanted answers from him by the end of October. This didn’t happen and I don’t know if we’ll return to the negotiations.

“What I want to be clear about is that our offer showed exactly how much we value him, but he didn’t accept it.

“He’s free to speak to whoever he wants from January 1.”

According to the Athletic, Liverpool are one of the clubs who have a ‘strong interest’ in Alaba’s services.

The versatile 28-year-old is capable of playing as a central midfielder and a left-back but he has been at his best since moving to the heart of defence.

With Liverpool’s options at the back looking light even before their recent injury problems, the addition of Alaba either on a free in the summer or for a cut-price fee in January would be an excellent piece of business but how would he fit into the first-team?

Should Alaba make the move to Anfield, Liverpool would boast an even more formidable line-up and he could partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence when the Dutchman returns from injury next season.

With Alisson Becker in between the sticks and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson at full-back, Liverpool’s backline would be one of the best in world football.

Alaba’s former Bayern team-mate Thiago Alcantara has struggled with injury problems since his move to Anfield but the club are hopeful he can reproduce his best form when he gets back in action.

With Van Dijk expected to return from his injury next season to potentially partner Alaba at the back, Fabinho could return to his favoured holding midfield role.

A fully fit Thiago would be tasked with running the show in midfield alongside club captain Jordan Henderson, especially if Georginio Wijnaldum decides against signing a new contract.

Despite Diogo Jota’s excellent form after his move from Wolves over the summer, Jurgen Klopp would likely favour a front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Firmino has had his struggles this season but the Brazilian has scored some important goals in recent weeks.

Salah has been linked with an exit after refusing to rule out a move to Spain but it seems unlikely either Real Madrid or Barcelona would be able to fork out the necessary funds to persuade Liverpool to let him leave, given their financial problems amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
