Manchester United are the only top club in Europe who would seriously consider signing Cristiano Ronaldo at the age of 36, claims European football expert Julien Laurens. Ronaldo and Juventus crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage on Tuesday after an extra-time defeat to Porto. It is the third season out of three where the Portuguese has been unable to lead Juve to the latter stages of the competition.

Ronaldo has a contract with the Old Lady until the summer of 2022.

But club chief Fabio Paratici recently said talks over a renewal are “not on the agenda right now”.

Ronaldo has often teased a return to United, the club where he first made his name before his sensational spell at Real Madrid.

Laurens cannot see any other side other than the Red Devils wanting to sign a player at Ronaldo’s age on the money he would demand.

And he would love to see him back in the red United jersey.

Speaking on the Gab and Juls podcast, Laurens said: “So where? So Bayern? No. Man City? No. Liverpool? No.

“Would Manchester United take him now? At 36. I would love that, I would love that.

“I think United are the only ones. There is no one else.”

Italian football expert Gabriele Marcotti believes, apart from Ronaldo’s wage demands, a move back to Old Trafford would make sense for all parties.

United look set to be in the market for a forward, with Edinson Cavani increasingly likely to leave after just one season at the club.

“If you take the money component out of it,” Marcotti said of a potential Ronaldo return.

“If you slot into the Cavani [position] and the money component is out of it, sure, why not?”

Marcotti believes Ronaldo could even accept a lower wage but says his goal return is still up there with the best.

He added: “Do you say ‘screw it, I’ve made enough money, let’s go to some place that gives me the best possible chance of winning and playing’? Winning the Champions League.

“Hypothetically, I don’t think this is going to happen, but hypothetically if Juve say you can leave on a free, he can still point to his goals record this year, not 100 years ago, and say ‘Okay, not too many guys apart from Kylian [Mbappe], Erling [Haaland] and Robert [Lewandowski], not too many guys do better than me’.”
