Liverpool players will be “over the moon” if the club brings in Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright. Thiago is heavily linked with a move to Anfield just weeks after helping Bayern win the Champions League in Lisbon. But the Reds are not yet prepared to pay the £27million asking price for a 29-year-old who is out of contract at the end of this season.
Liverpool have only made one signing so far in this window, bringing in Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas for just under £12m.
But Wright believes it is important that Jurgen Klopp adds to his squad after Chelsea’s spending spree this summer.
“You’re looking at Liverpool, I was quite excited for Liverpool that they might get Thiago because if they do, they haven’t made any real signings Liverpool apart from Tsimikas, the left-back to help Andy Robertson,” Wright said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show.
“But you think to yourself they need something because I don’t think they’re going to run away with it.

“The way Chelsea have responded, Man United are going to have to respond, we saw the difference [United] had with one signing [Bruno Fernandes].”
Wright believes there is a need for a player like Thiago in the Liverpool midfield.

The pundit has compared a potential deal to when Klopp signed Virgil van Dijk and Alisson in 2018.
Wright added: “I think [Liverpool could take a step backwards] because when you look at Liverpool in the midfield area, they need that player, just like they needed Alisson – it was blatantly obvious to see what was going on with the goalkeepers – and the centre-half because of what was happening with Lovren and the mistakes.

“They made those signings and they’ve been magnificent.
“They need that creative Thiago in there to help with the guys up front, that’s the next thing in their building blocks. Who’s going to do that job? Because they need something else.
“If he comes to the dressing room – like we were hearing about Messi might be going to City – if he comes to your dressing room, Thiago, you are absolutely over the moon.
“That is the kind of lift where people say ‘here go Liverpool again’, I’m telling you.”
