Ian Wright reveals was Sir Alex Ferguson has told him about Mason Greenwood

Ian Wright is confident returning hero Cristiano Ronaldo will have a ‘frighteningly’ positive effect on Manchester United’s young players, and Mason Greenwood in particular.

The teenage prodigy has begun the season in outstanding fashion, scoring in three successive matches, including the late winner against Wolves prior to the international break which extended United’s unbeaten run away from home to a record 28 matches.

Greenwood has led the line with distinction in the absences of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani for various reasons during the formative stages of the campaign, but Ronaldo’s return could see him shunted out to the wing.

Regardless of where plays, however, former Arsenal star Wright believes Ronaldo, who is primed to make his second debut for United at home to Newcastle on Saturday, can only have a positive impact on Greenwood, whom Sir Alex Ferguson has been privately raving about.

Wright told Premier League Productions: ‘The only thing I can equate Ronaldo’s return to is just knowing that Dennis Bergkamp was coming for us at Arsenal and how that changed us.

‘I cannot even get into the realms of thinking what that is going to do for their academy players, especially someone like Greenwood.

‘He can just watch now. Cristiano Ronaldo will probably want to impart and tell him what he needs to do.

‘I was speaking to Sir Alex the other day, we were playing golf and he mentioned about Mason Greenwood being one of the best they’ve ever had out of their academy.

‘Now you put one of the best players that’s ever played for the football club, he’s come back as a world icon to play with him and alongside him it’s frightening what this guy could turn into.

‘The mentality of him rubbing off on people could be the difference for Manchester United.’
