Inside Ronaldo’s ‘siuuu’ celebration – and why Man Utd can expect more of it

Manchester United have revealed the reason behind Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic ‘siuuu’ celebration ahead of a potential second debut this Saturday.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner returned to Manchester on Transfer Deadline Day after a 12-year absence and many fans are eagerly anticipating a homecoming appearance against Newcastle this weekend.

The Portuguese legend has penned a two-year deal with United, with the option of an extra year, transferring from Serie A giants Juventus for £12.5 million.

He has already been granted his number seven shirt, previous owner Edinson Cavani stepped aside to grant the global icon his preferred squad number.

And now, ahead of his second debut at Man Utd, the club have delved into the archives to reveal the reason behind his 'siuuu’ celebration.

It's a tradition that only start once the Portuguese legend left United in 2009, in a world-record transfer to Real Madrid:

“I started to say ‘si’, it’s like ‘yes’, when I was in Real Madrid,” Ronaldo said in an interview in 2019, as reported on the Man Utd website.

“When we would win, everyone would say ‘siiiii’ and so I started to say it. I don’t know why, it was natural.

“I was in the USA and we played against Chelsea [in 2013] and I don’t know where this is coming from, the celebration.

“I just scored the goal and it just came out. It was just natural, to be honest. Since that, I started to do it more often and I feel like the supporters and the fans see it and they’re like ‘Cristiano, siiiiiiuuuu’.

“I’m like ‘wow! People are reminded of me because of it!’

“So it’s good, and I’ll continue doing it like that.”

With Ronaldo netting at least 20 goals in all competitions for the previous 15 seasons, you may expect the 'siuuu’ celebration to appear more than few times for Man Utd – perhaps even starting Saturday.
