Jack Grealish insists that John Gregory’s claim his X-rated rant from the touchline got the England star subbed off while at Notts County in 2013 ‘never happened’.
Grealish, 28, spent the 2013-14 season on loan to Notts County from Aston Villa, making 38 appearances and scoring five goals for the League One club.
Gregory, who was managing Crawley Town at the time, told a podcast that he was responsible for the mind games behind Grealish being taken off during a game in West Sussex in December 2013 – a claim which Grealish disputed on Instagram.
Gregory told the Undr the Cosh podcast: ‘I actually got Jack Grealish taken off once. He was on loan at Notts County from Villa… He must have been about 18 or 19 at the time.
‘I’m in the dugout and whenever he came near me, I said, “F***ing Jack Grealish. Aston Villa. F***ing rubbish. No wonder they’ve f***ing sent you out to Notts County.” I’m right in his ear, “No wonder they don’t f***ing want you up there”. Getting into him.

‘They take him off and he went home and told his dad and his dad spoke to one of my friends. He said, “Hey, what about your mate Gregory having a pop at my Jack?”. So my mate said, “Took him off though, didn’t they?”.’
However, Grealish took to the Instagram comments underneath Undr The Cosh’s post to dispute the claim.
Grealish wrote: ‘John Gregory – Episode 1 of things that never happened… What a clown.’
Crawley Town won the game in December 2013 1-0 courtesy of a Mark Connolly goal, while Grealish started the game and came off in the 66th minute, according to ESPN.
Gregory was Aston Villa manager between 1998 and 2002, and also took charge of Wycombe Wanderers, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers in his managerial career.
Grealish has been part of the set-up at Villa since the age of six, but went on loan to League One Notts County for his first real taste of senior football.
After impressing at Villa, Grealish made a £100m move to Manchester City in 2021, and has become a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s side in the past two years.
