James Maddison helping out old boss Daniel Farke as Spurs ace ‘recommends’ deal

Emile Smith Rowe could make Chelsea transfer after failing to meet Mikel Arteta demand

Tottenham ace James Maddison has recommended former Leicester City team-mate Luke Thomas to his old boss Daniel Farke at Leeds United, according to reports. The Yorkshire outfit have endured a turbulent start to life back in the Championship and could look to strengthen their squad in advance of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Leeds have been tipped to pursue the signing of another defender following an injury to Junior Firpo, with Sam Byram having deputised at left-back over the last few weeks. It would not be a surprise for Leeds to add extra cover in the position before the window closes, although time is running out for the Whites to get a deal done.

It seems as though Leeds may have been given an unlikely helping hand by Maddison, who played under Farke during his time at Norwich City. The midfielder has been in touch with his former boss to discuss the idea of a move for Leicester outcast Thomas, according to talkSPORT.

Thomas has fallen out of favour at the King Power Stadium under Enzo Maresca, who seems to prefer Manchester City loanee Callum Doyle at left-back, and is said to be keen on playing regular football elsewhere. Maddison is now reported to have taken matters into his own hands by recommending him to Farke in a bid to solve the problem.

Leicester are said to be open to letting Thomas leave but the Foxes would prefer to sell him permanently as opposed to sanctioning a loan deal. He is yet to play a single minute in the Championship this season and will be out of contract next summer, at which point he would be able to depart Leicester on a free transfer.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds will be able to bring Thomas to Elland Road over the coming days, with Farke having already welcomed several new faces to his squad this summer. The likes of Ethan Ampadu and Karl Darlow have arrived on permanent deals, while Joe Rodon joined the club on a season-long loan from Tottenham earlier this month.

Leeds have also reinforced their forward line with the signing of Joel Piroe from Swansea City, while teenage midfielder Archie Gray has been like a new signing in the engine room. Left-back is still an area of concern heading into the final stages of the transfer window, though, and only time will tell whether a deal for Thomas can be struck in what little time remains.

It has certainly been a difficult start to the campaign for Leeds, who earned just two points from their first three matches back in the Championship. However, they managed to return to winning ways against Ipswich on Saturday and will be looking to build on their newly-found momentum over the next few weeks.
