Jamie Carragher believes Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will make a “huge difference” at Chelsea this season, but not enough to catch Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
Reports suggest the Blues are on the verge of signing Mendy, with Rennes accepting an initial £18million offer for the Senegal shot-stopper that could rise to £23million through add-ons.
Frank Lampard is keen to add another goalkeeper to his ranks amid concerns over current No.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga, who recorded the second-lowest save percentage in the Premier League last season.
And it seems he has got his man, as Mendy is understood to have completed his medical at Stamford Bridge over the weekend.
Nevertheless, Liverpool legend Carragher doesn’t think the 28-year-old will transform Chelsea into title challengers this season.
“[Signing Mendy] would make a huge difference in terms of points,” he said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“Would it be enough to catch the top two? No, I don’t think it will be.”
Mendy will become Chelsea’s eighth signing of the summer when he finally seals his switch from Rennes.
The west London club have already splashed over £200million on Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech – while Thiago Silva has also joined on a free transfer.
But Carragher will not be convinced they can compete for the title until they bring in a world-class goalkeeper.
When asked if Chelsea will be title challengers this year, the former Reds defender said: “Not for me, no. Because the spending has been at the top end of the pitch and until Chelsea rectify their goalkeeping situation I don’t see them winning the league.
“You only have to look at Pep Guardiola’s first season in England, Jurgen Klopp’s first 18 months, until they signed goalkeepers and they made the real difference.

“If Chelsea signed a top goalkeeper, I think that will make a big difference.
“And also to be fair to Chelsea and Frank I think the expenditure of this transfer window is almost three or four transfer windows of money getting spent in one go.”
