And in a three-minute long monologue Stelling, who announced he would stepping down in April, said to the camera: "This is tricky because I've changed my mind. Just kidding, I haven't changed my mind this time!

"It was fantastic to see people we've all worked with for years, the likes of Alan Mullrey, Frank McLintock and Clive Allen, as well as the old gang. I've had some fantastic messages during the last few days from the likes of Gordon Strachan, Neil Warnock, Richie Humphreys, Kammy, of course.

"And people from outside of football; Georgie Ainslie who we know as Georgie Thompson. Elton John rang me this week! Someone asked me the other day whether I'd ever been starstruck and 'yeah, I was starstruck when Elton John rang me at home!'

"He said thank you so much for everything you've done. I sit at home every week and I watch the show – and every week you tell me Watford are losing and every week you tell me Hartlepool are losing, so I feel like we're kindred spirits!"

“There’s something in that isn’t there. The great thing is it’s what people don’t know is that it’s a team game.

"Right through to people in call centres who take your calls if something is going wrong, right through to the runners who work on the show, the production team, the people behind the cameras and obviously the people who are here.

"We have heard from a lot of them Thommo [Phil Thompson] and Charlie [Nicholas], Matt Le Tissier and this gang of four. Everyone I've worked with over the past 30 years, I'd like to say thank you for that.

"It's been absolutely wonderful. It's been the best job that anybody could possibly have wished for. My wife takes great pleasure in saying 'you are the luckiest man ever to take a breath.' And you know what – and I don't tell her this often – she's right.'

"The principal success was Soccer Saturday and I just want to say this before I go. You lot at home have given us unswerving support both for the programme and for me personally. Soccer Saturday will be back next season, and I'll be watching from home."

"From me, goodbye."

Stelling's final shift saw Leeds and Leicester relegated from the Premier League, as Everton's win over Bournemouth kept them in the top division.
