Joao Cancelo 'to start on the BENCH' against Paris Saint-Germain

Joao Cancelo ‘to start on the BENCH’ against Paris Saint-Germain with Julian Nagelsmann preferring a back-three at present – leaving the Portuguese ‘frustrated’ having left Manchester City in search of minutes

  • Portuguese departed Manchester City for Bayern Munich in January window
  • He joined Julian Nagelsmann’s side initially on loan with view to permanent deal
  • Reportedly frustrated owing to starting on bench against Paris Saint-Germain

Joao Cancelo will reportedly start Wednesday night’s clash against Paris Saint-Germain on the bench with Julian Nagelsmann opting for a back three.

The Portuguese joined the German champions at the end of the January transfer window, initially on loan with an option to buy for £70m, partly in search for minutes after falling out of favour at Manchester City.

Despite taking to life in Germany almost immediately, recording an assist on his first appearance, Cancelo is now reportedly experiencing some difficulties.

Over the weekend, he was an unused substitute against Stuttgart as Bayern Munich won 2-1.

Josip Stanisic was preferred at right-back, while Alphonso Davies played on the left.

Joao Cancelo is reportedly set for the bench on Wednesday night as Julian Nagelsmann opts for other options

The Portuguese departed Manchester City in January – though is finding life somewhat difficult reportedly

This trend, according to Sky Germany, is set to continue into Wednesday night – a game which has been dubbed the biggest of the club’s season so far.

It is being reported that Cancelo will once again be an option off the bench, with Nagelsmann planning to continue with the back three that has seen them get their league campaign back on track.

Nagelsmann, according to reports, sees Cancelo as a ‘typical’ full-back and as such not as suited to the current team as Croatia international Stanisic.

It leaves questions further unanswered in regards to both Cancelo and Manchester City.

His fall from grace at the club was swift and stark, though supporters have been left pondering why he was allowed to go – his lack of starts for Bayern Munich.

Nagelsmann faces perhaps biggest night in management so far against Paris Saint-Germain

Nagelsmann has opted for a back-three of sorts in recent weeks which struggles to accommodate the Portuguese

Speaking after the game against Stuttgart, Nagelsmann said Cancelo was ‘handling’ his benching well and explained the reasons why.

‘He’s handling the situation well,’ Nagelsmann, who is facing perhaps the biggest 90 minutes of his managerial career to date with pressure on him to ensure his side advance deep into the Champions League this season.

‘I don’t have any impression that he’s breaking off. Stanisic is a bit more defensive and João has never played right centre-back in a back 3.’

Bayern Munich lead PSG 1-0 on aggregate after the tie in Paris, which saw Kingsley Coman score the only goal in an assured victory for the six-time winners.
