New Roma boss Jose Mourinho has returned to Manchester United as he searches for a solution to a major problem in his squad. Mourinho has taken over at the Serie A side and is aiming to lead them back into the Champions League.

But he has been dealt a major blow before even taking charge of a competitive game, with the news that left-back Leonardo Spinazzola suffered a significant Achillies injury at Euro 2020.

Spinazzola was one of the stars of the tournament as his Italy side won their first international trophy since the 2006 World Cup.

He impressed throughout the competition, including in the quarter-final win over Belgium in Munich.

But 11 minutes from time in that game, Spinazzola pulled up while sprinting for the ball and he was subsequently stretchered off.

Following the game, it emerged that the left-back had ruptured the Achilles tendon in his left leg and he later underwent surgery.

While the exact recovery time is still to be decided, Mourinho confirmed that the injury means he will be without Spinazzola for a significant time period.

“We all feel sorry about the loss of our Spinazzola for a few months but that’s football and we have to be ready to start next week,” the Portuguese manager said.

Spinazzola’s injury leaves a massive hole in Mourinho’s squad for next season and he is now searching for a replacement.

One name who has emerged as a target is United’s Alex Telles, with Calciomercato and Sky Italia reporting Roma are eyeing a loan move for the Brazilian.

Telles has failed to break past a resurgent Luke Shaw and into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans since moving to Old Trafford last year.

With Shaw continuing to impress, the Red Devils have told Telles he is free to find a new club this summer.

He made just nine appearances in the Premier League last season, spending long periods warming the bench.

The 28-year-old does already have experience of playing in Serie A, having spent a year on loan with Inter Milan in the 2015/2016 season.

But while Roma are interested in bringing him to Italy, United are understood to only be ready to sanction a permanent deal.

Though Spinazzola’s injury is a significant one, he is expected to be ready to return to action at some point next season.

That presents Mourinho and Roma with a dilemma, as they only need to sign a temporary replacement for their stricken star.

But with United holding out for a permanent transfer, they could be forced to add long-term competition for Spinazzola.
