- Lemar came off the bench to help the team towards a crucial three points
- Griezmann starts for Atletico yet struggled to make an impact on the game
- The victory leaves the La Liga champions at the top of the table after four games
Thomas Lemar scored in the ninth minute of added time to give Atletico Madrid a last-gasp 2-1 victory away at newly-promoted Espanyol in LaLiga on Sunday.
Raul de Tomas gave Espanyol the lead just before half-time after dominating the game against the La Liga champions.
Lemar came on after the break and immediately influenced the game and was denied an equaliser after Luis Suarez was deemed to be offside and interfering with play in the build-up to the goal.
Griezmann made his return to Atletico yet was unable to impress on his second debut
Antoine Griezmann, who was making his second debut for the club after returning from Barcelona, was unable to make an impact on the game and was taken off by Diego Simeone with over half an hour left to play.
Yannick Carrasco levelled for the visitors 11 minutes from full time when Atletico were largely looking out of ideas.
Carrasco’s effort looked to have ensured the spoils would be shared as it looked like neither team would score.
However, after the referee added 10 minutes of stoppage time on to a feisty encounter, Lemar broke into the Espanyol box in the final minute to fire past Diego Lopez and secure all three points for Atleti.
The French international changed the game and finished his excellent performance with a goal
Lemar’s important late goal created a dramatic end to the match deep into injury time
The result means Atleti move top of the table with 10 points with a number of the other sides at the top yet to play this weekend.
This important victory will also be crucial for the team’s confidence next week as they start their Champions League campaign against Porto on Wednesday.
Espanyol, meanwhile, have two points from their four games this campaign.
