Football Digest: Newcastle could be a Premier League title contender
Liverpool and Chelsea transfer target Bruno Guimaraes publicly snubbed both teams as he celebrated his goal during Newcastle’s 8-0 Premier League thrashing of Sheffield United on Sunday. The midfielder was in scintillating form once again and notched his team’s seventh strike of the afternoon as the Magpies put their rivals to the sword at St James’ Park.
Guimaraes has been a star performer in the Premier League since joining Newcastle from Lyon for an initial £35million in January 2022. And his displays have piqued the attentions of a host of clubs, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid all showing an interest.
Liverpool reportedly had a £100m bid for the Brazil international turned down in the summer as Jurgen Klopp looked to replace Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who both departed for Saudi Arabia. And Chelsea apparently contacted the Magpies to discuss the prospect of taking the ace to Stamford Bridge when the next transfer window opens.
But Guimaraes revealed exactly what he thought of the transfer talk after getting his name on the scoresheet against the Blades as he kissed the Newcastle badge on his shirt and shouted, “I’m staying.”

Guimaraes is said to be close to penning fresh terms in the north east as Newcastle look to tie him down to a longer contract. And on Monday, his agent Alexis Malavolta hinted that a new deal was done and dusted as he took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a video of his client nutmegging James McAtee, while tagging the player and the club next to a writing hand emoji.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are set to extend Guimaraes’ contract to the end of the 2027/28 campaign and insert a release clause in the region of £100m. And that means Liverpool and Chelsea may cool their interest in the star unless they are willing to stump-up prodigious sums of cash.

In the summer, Guimaraes gave an interview to Globo Esporte, where he touched upon his career at St James’ Park. And the ace told the publication: “When I arrived, it was already the new project [following the takeover], but the club was in the relegation zone. A lot of people called me crazy – crazy for going there – but it was the best decision of my life.
“In the following season, we already got a place in the Champions League and stopped the city. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like if we’re champions. It was special, a remarkable year for everyone. We really deserve this Champions League qualification.”
