Klopp slams scheduling of Liverpool’s next game against Man City
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been scolded by former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley due to his insistence on playing World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister in a deeper position than he used to play at Brighton. Mac Allister was employed as an attacking midfielder for much of last season on the south coast but has been moved to a No 6 role since moving to Anfield.
Mac Allister has been a key player under Klopp this season and had started every Premier League match for the Reds before sitting out Sunday’s victory over Brentford due to a suspension. And he has only been on the losing side on one occasion in the top-flight since switching to the north west.
Burley was told by host Dan Thomas on the ESPN podcast that the stats showed Mac Allister and fellow midfielder Dominic Szoboszlai to be two of Liverpool’s most influential players this season. And Burley replied: “It’s strange because I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Mac Allister at Liverpool.
“No matter what the stats say, he’s playing slightly deeper than he was at Brighton. That’s due to personnel. I think Szoboszlai has certainly caught the eye more. I think there’s more to come from those two when they get the right blend behind them and allow them to push up the field a little bit.”

Klopp was quizzed about Mac Allister’s role during a press conference last month. And the German explained: “It’s early in the season, so who knows who will play from next week on in which position because it depends on availability and stuff like this.
“The way we play, it’s definitely possible. You only talk about a player in a position that he is not this or that when, as a team, you are not compact enough defending. Of course Macca can play the position, there’s no doubt about it.

“We can play a different system, with a double pivot if you want. There really are plenty of things. That’s not my problem at all at the moment, that I think about it when I wake up at night, who we can play there.”
Liverpool snapped Mac Allister up for a bargain £35million in the summer after the 24-year-old had starred for Brighton. The ace started six games for Argentina at last year’s World Cup as his country lifted the trophy for the third time in their history. And he even bagged an assist in the final against France as Argentina won the showpiece event following a penalty shootout.
