New Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara reportedly snubbed a return to Barcelona in order to join Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer.
The Premier League champions secured a £20million deal to sign Thiago from Bayern Munich last month, which will be paid over the course of his four-year contract at Anfield.
He certainly hit the ground running on his debut for the club, producing a classy performance after coming on as a half-time substitute in their 2-0 win away at Chelsea on September 20.
According to The Guardian, Thiago was offered the chance to rejoin Barca before sealing a move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
The Spain midfielder is a product of Barca’s academy, emerging from their youth ranks to make 101 appearances for the senior team.
He eventually followed ex-manager Pep Guardiola to Bayern in 2013, where he racked up 235 appearances while winning seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.
Barca were understood to be keen on bringing him back to the Nou Camp as part of Ronald Koeman’s revolution in Catalonia.
However, Klopp proved instrumental in luring the 29-year-old to Merseyside, convincing him to join Liverpool over video call.
Thiago was reportedly left “enthralled” by his chat with the Reds boss, and after completing the move last month he said: “I was waiting for this moment for a long time and I am very, very happy to be here.
“I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible.
“It also [has] this kind of family [feeling] that I need because we [like to] have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.”
