Liverpool fans rave about Jota stat compared to Rashford

Liverpool fans have raved about Diogo Jota after a statistic emerged which suggested he has had a better season than Manchester United star Marcus Rashford.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds from Premier League rivals Wolves last summer in a transfer rising to £45million if add-ons are met.

The Portuguese international impressed in his first season at Anfield, becoming a regular spark of creativity for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who struggled going forward.

That was despite the 24-year-old being sidelined with a knee injury for nearly three months and suffering a knock in a dead-rubber Champions League group stage match against Midtjylland.

Those injury issues, coupled with Klopp’s trust of Roberto Firminio, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah meant that Jota was limited to only 12 starts in the Premier League.

But despite being in the starting line-up an astonishing 22 times less than Rashford, Jota finished with only two fewer goals.

Jota started his Liverpool career quickly, scoring five goals in his first nine games in the top-flight, before adding another four when he returned from injury.

Despite making 33 starts for the Red Devils in the Premier League, Rashford only managed to score 11 goals.

The Liverpool star being so close to equalling Rashford’s goal return despite his disrupted season has delighted Reds fans on Reddit.

“On one hand, Rashford's been run ragged by United so he's not putting up the numbers. But even so the man scores. Jota being so close to him is brilliant for the future,” one fan wrote.

“He started the season ridiculous well. Then that pointless injury against Mitdylland. But a hell of a player to have on our hands,” another supporter added.

Reds supporters also believe that had Jota stayed fit, Liverpool’s fortunes in the top-flight would have been much improved.

“I'm convinced that if Jota hasn't been injured, we'd have at least finished second, even with everything else that went wrong for us. The man was on fire,” one said.

“If Jota hadn’t been injured, we’d have a legit shot at the title and with a little more momentum, maybe even the CL final,” a second wrote.
