Liverpool ‘target Bayer Leverkusen’s £80m-rated wonderkid Florian Wirtz’ as a potential Mohamed Salah replacement – but the German is ‘also attracting interest from Man City, Bayern Munich and Chelsea’

  • Liverpool have ‘entered the race’ to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen
  • German international is also ‘wanted by Man City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich’

Liverpool have joined the race to sign highly-rated German attacker Florian Wirtz, according to reports.

Despite making a promising start to the current season that has seen them win seven of the first 10 Premier League games and score 23 goals in the process, the Reds are still looking to bolster their attacking options.

Mohamed Salah has been at his clinical best so far this term, and Darwin Nunez has taken a step up after an inconsistent first season at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp may not be able to resist the opportunity to bring countryman Wirtz to the Premier League.

According to the Daily Star, Liverpool have joined the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in regsitering an interest in the £80million-rated forward.

The report suggests that Klopp plans to use his contacts in Germany to help his side gain an edge in the race for Wirtz’ signature.

It is also indicated that Manchester United are no longer in the running to sign the 20-year-old, with the attacker believing he has better options on the table following the recent struggles of the Old Trafford club.

Wirtz has been in fine form for Bayer Leverkusen, collecting six goals and nine assists across all competitions as Xabi Alonso’s team remain unbeaten this term.

Alonso compared the 12-cap German international to Lionel Messi earlier this year, hinting as to why so many of Europe’s top clubs appear to be chasing him.

The former Liverpool midfielder said: ‘There are good players and there are players who look good on the pitch. The player who looks good does things that are nice, but not necessarily efficient.

The attacker has 12 caps for Germany, and is also coveted by the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich

Mo Salah has enjoyed a typically-clinical season so far at Anfield but rumours of a potential move to the Saudi Pro League persist

‘Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: “You’re in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!”

‘It’s not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That’s why he’s so good.’

With rumours of a move to the Saudi Pro League for Salah persisting, there could well be an attacking vacancy to fill at Anfield in the coming months.

Although Leverkusen are likely to turn down any bids for Wirtz in January as they chase a first-ever Bundesliga title, Wirtz could well be set to link up with Klopp on Merseyside at the end of the season.
