Manchester City fans have hijacked the club’s Player of the Season award and have voted for Kalvin Phillips.

As the season draws to a close and City enter the final stretch of their treble-chasing end to the campaign, the Citizens opened the voting to fans to crown their player of the season.

But the voting has taken a turn after it was hijacked by City and football fans alike who opted not to back record-breaking Erling Haaland or any of Pep Guardiola’s mainstays in the star-studded side.

Instead voters have chosen to give their vote to forgotten man Phillips, who has racked up more than 50,000 votes of the 80,000 plus votes so far.

The trend of voting for Phillips has gathered further pace on Twitter as City fans and fellow football fans have shared their insincere support for Phillips.

“I have just voted for Kalvin Phillips as the ETIHAD player of the Season. Do your part mate,” one commented.

Although said: “Ayoo imagine Kalvin Phillips winning Etihad player of the season.”

Whilst another comment read: “Voted for Kalvin Phillips as player of the season for Man City he’s having the best season of his career.”

The 27-year-old has featured just 17 times this season in all competitions to date, seeing only backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega play fewer games this campaign amongst senior members of the squad.

It would be a surprise to see Haaland not receive the Premier League’s Player of the Season award, let alone City’s, after scoring 35 goals in 32 games so far to set a new Premier League record for goals in a single campaign, breaking Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s previous joint record of 34 – which came in 42-game campaigns, compared to the current 38-match incarnation.

Guardiola previously referred to Phillips as ‘overweight’ after the league’s return following the World Cup, comments that saw him left out of the squad and taunted by opposition fans.

But Phillips’ career and ability is far greater than being seen as a meme figure within the City ranks. It will be interesting to see whether City honour the results of the vote, if Phillips does emerge as the elected winner.
