Man United are 'considering a move for Gregor Kobel'

Man United are ‘considering a move for Gregor Kobel’ – even if David de Gea signs a new contract – with Erik ten Hag ‘keen to create competition and make sure he has different tactical options’ in goal next season

  • United have been in talks with De Gea for a while and it looks like he will stay
  • The Spaniard struggles with his feet, however, whereas Kobel is comfortable
  • De Gea has struggled this term despite winning the Golden Glove in the league

Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel as they look to strengthen their depth between the sticks.

There has been plenty of interest around the Red Devils’ number one position with David De Gea out of contract this summer, though talks are progressing and the Spaniard is set to sign a new deal.

United wanted him to take a pay cut from his mega £375,000-per-week wages, and negotiations have been ongoing, but they look to be finally coming to an end.

United would have had to move for a new goalkeeper if an agreement could not have been reached, or trust Dean Henderson to make the step up following his loan move at Nottingham Forest.

According to The Independent, however, United may make the move for Kobel even if De Gea stays, creating room for competition for their starting goalkeeper spot.

The United boss is also reportedly keen for tactical flexibility with his goalkeepers

Despite his struggles this season, De Gea won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award with 16 clean sheets so far this campaign.

The 32-year-old has had difficulties with manager Erik ten Hag’s style, struggling to play out from the back with the ball at his feet and being caught out on a number of occasions.

He has been in talks with the club over a new deal, but the Red Devils were demanding he takes a major pay cut from his mega wages given by Ed Woodward.

His new deal of around £200,000-a-week brings him in line with the rest of the United back line and it became clear to the player given his inconsistent form, brilliant one week and bizarre the next, that nobody in Europe would offer him more.

Kobel, meanwhile, may be offered a new deal at Borussia Dortmund but could still leave

Kobel, meanwhile, is much more comfortable with his feet and has had a successful season with Dortmund as they continue to chase the Bundesliga title.

The German side are planning on offering the 25-year-old a new deal themselves, but he has been subject to interest several sides in the Premier League, including United and Chelsea, and may opt to move.

He has made 74 appearances for Dortmund since joining the club from Hoffenheim in 2021 and has become a reliable player for manager Edin Terzic in goal.

If he opts again joining United, it’s likely the club will look elsewhere to bring in another goalkeeper this summer.
