The Dutchman is out of favour at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag has told the midfielder to seek first-team football away from the club.

Van de Beek joined United in a £34millon deal from Ajax in 2020 but his time at the club has been ravaged by injuries and a lack of form.

The Netherlands international joined Everton on a six-month loan in 2022 before returning to the Theatre of Dreams after Ten Hag’s appointment.

Van de Beek worked with the Dutchman at Ajax and it was hoped he could resurrect his time at the club.

But Ten Hag has failed in his mission and, with the United boss keen to sign a new midfielder, he’s sanctioned Van de Beek’s departure.

United have therefore accepted a bid from Ligue 1 side Lorient for the midfielder, according to French reporter Santi Aouna.

Van de Beek must agree to the deal before any move can take place, and the midfielder had been keen on joining Real Sociedad earlier in the window.

Should he agree to leave, United would free up space in their midfield for a new arrival.

Having already sold Fred and Marcel Sabitzer, United would have a seriously weakened midfield from last season.

Ten Hag has shown interest in Sofyan Amrabat and Ryan Gravenberch in recent weeks.
