Manchester United and Manchester City have expressed their disappointment in both Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden respectively.

The pair have been sent home from England duty by Gareth Southgate after breaking Covid-19 protocols.

The FA have launched an investigation into reports the duo broke the squad bubble by inviting two women back to the team hotel in Reykjavik following England's 1-0 win in the Nations League.

The Red Devils have said: "Manchester United are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood ver this situation."

United do not expect Greenwood will have to undergo a period of quarantine as he heads back to Manchester.

However, a decision will be made in due course as to when he can return to training.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have been ready to potentially use teenager Greenwood from the off for the new season.

But it now remains to be seen when the forward will feature for United in the Premier League.

City's statement on Foden, meanwhile, was far stronger and they are clearly unimpressed with the player's behaviour.

Their assessment of the incident reads: "It is clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate.

“His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international.

"The club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the club are now in touch in relation to Phil’s enforced early return to the UK.”
