Manchester United have left it until the final hours of the summer transfer window to announce a deal in principle to sign Amad Diallo Traore in January. The Red Devils have spent all summer tracking a move to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to strengthen his options on the right wing.
The 20-year-old was United’s top target but they weren’t prepared to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £108million asking price.
Alternative targets were then identified with players such as Ivan Perisic and Douglas Costa linked with moves to Old Trafford.
But United have opted to stick with their transfer policy of targeting young and promising players by agreeing terms with Atalanta to sign Traore.
The 18-year-old will join the Red Devils in January, subject to a medical, personal terms and work permit.
United state they have been tracking Traore’s progress for the past four seasons.
He is highly regarded in Italy have risen through the ranks at Atlanta.
The teenager has only made three senior appearances for Atalanta, scoring on his debut last season.
United will reportedly pay £19m up front with £8.5m in add-ons.
The announcement is United’s second on transfer deadline deal following a deal to sign Alex Telles from Porto for £15m.
The left-back signed a contract until June 2024, with the option of a further year.
United and Porto had been locked in negotiations over the past week with the Portuguese side holding out for £22.5m.
However, there was a breakthrough in negotiations on Sunday with Porto eventually accepting United’s latest bid.
