Man Utd could be about to sign another ‘Cantona’ after private transfer talks

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews Wolves win

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has, according to reports, talked with Adrien Rabiot about a potential move to Old Trafford this summer. The Juventus star is yet to sign a new contract in Turin and, as a result, could be on the move come the end of the season. And while there’s some opposition to a transfer, not everybody feels that way…

Reports linking Rabiot with a move to United are nothing new, of course.

He was previously on the radar of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time in the dugout, only for the 50-year-old to deem a deal for the France international to be too risky.

And then, last summer, United again looked at landing Rabiot. They even agreed a fee with Juventus for the 28-year-old, only for the player’s wage demands to scupper their chances of striking gold.

According to L’Equipe, however, Rabiot is back on their radar. Ten Hag has apparently talked with the midfielder already, suggesting a move is feasible.

Some United fans don’t want the Juventus star, making it clear they’re opposed to a move already.

Others, however, are more open to a deal.

And former United star Paul Parker, speaking back in the summer, expressed a belief that Rabiot could be like Cantona if he moves to the Premier League.

“Everyone is throwing up a wall of hate against him (Adrian Rabiot) at the moment because everyone is looking at his history,” he said.

“They (Man Utd) need something different. They need somebody who’s got a point to prove.

“I think, if you would have looked at the same things in 1992 when Eric Cantona come to Manchester United. The only thing he was living off was the season with Leeds and winning the league and winning Championship; the last league Championship and beating Manchester United to that title as well. That’s all Eric had in his locker.

“So Manchester United fans could have been saying that about him then.”

He added: “I don’t think you can really judge him (Adrian Rabiot) straight away. Some people find their home.

“Eric Cantona found his home. He was a maverick and he found a sheriff in Sir Alex Ferguson, who was willing to leave the jail door open for him.

“And that’s called good management.

“So maybe if he (Rabiot) gets managed right you can get more.”

United, if they sign Rabiot, could deploy him alongside Casemiro.

That would perhaps stunt their creativity but would provided added solidarity instead.

And Bruno Fernandes could then be played ahead of the pair in the No 10 role he’s often sparkled in since his arrival nearly three-and-a-half years ago.

Meanwhile, speaking in March, Rabiot suggested he could end up staying at Juventus.

But he also made it clear he was unsure over his future, in comments that will give the Red Devils hope.

“At the moment, there’s no news, but we’ll certainly talk soon,” he said at the time.

“Because in about two months the season will be over and we’ll try to discuss it, but I’m calm.

“There is the possibility of leaving but also the possibility of signing another contract with Juve for all the reasons I explained earlier.”

He added: “I feel good in Turin, I do a good job at the club and there’s a good relationship with the directors, my team-mates and the coach.

“He also helped me in two years as well as giving me a lot of confidence.

“I believe that all of this is important to feel good and therefore make the right choice for my future.”
