Man Utd hero Roy Keane left baffled by Reguilon’s actions before Arsenal clash

Erik ten Hag previews Arsenal v Man Utd clash

Roy Keane was not best pleased at the sight of new Manchester United signing Sergio Reguilon embracing the opposition before kick-off at the Emirates Stadium. The left-back was seen shaking hands with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard in the tunnel, with the two sides gearing up for a heavyweight Premier League clash in north London.

Reguilon completed a loan move from Tottenham to the Red Devils on deadline day. The Spaniard has been drafted in by Erik ten Hag as cover for the injured Luke Shaw, although Diogo Dalot – a right-back by trade – was selected to start against the Gunners.

That left Reguilon on the bench, and as he made his way through the tunnel before kick-off, the on-loan Spurs man took time to shake hands with his former foe, Odegaard, in what appeared to be a warm and friendly embrace.

“Jokes aside, I’m just looking at the tunnel there,” Keane told Sky Sports. “Everyone thinks I’m old school… I don’t know why you’d want to be chatting to people that you’re going to go into battle with.

“You’re going to be kicking lumps out of each other. So why shake hands?! I’ll shake it after the game, not before you go into a battle, but maybe these younger players will educate me.”

Reguilon certainly won’t want to get off on the wrong foot with respected figures at Old Trafford. The 26-year-old has a break clause in his loan arrangement that could see United send him back to Spurs in January, so he can’t afford to waste any time in making a good impression.

Having risen through the ranks at Real Madrid, Reguilon made his true breakthrough while on loan at Sevilla in 2019/20. That stellar campaign prompted Tottenham to shell out a hefty £32million package.

And while Reguilon started promisingly with the Londoners, he quickly slid down the pecking order, and was forced into an underwhelming loan stint at Atletico Madrid last campaign. The Spanish international is therefore hoping to get his career back on track with the Red Devils.

Speaking in his press conference earlier this week, Ten Hag addressed what he feels Reguilon can bring to the squad. “He is a very experienced player, a player for big clubs, a player that’s played already a lot of games in La Liga, in the Premier League,” explained the Dutchman.

“So he has a very good background, we have seen he can play very intense football, so we are happy. While we had a problem with Luke Shaw injured, Tyrell Malacia injured, they are out for the long term, so I think we responded very well in that emergency situation.”
