Manchester United reportedly launched a surprise enquiry for Wolves full-back Matt Doherty. The Republic of Ireland international is set to complete a switch to Tottenham this weekend before joining up with his new team-mates after the international break.
Doherty has enjoyed two impressive campaigns in the Premier League since Wolves sealed a return to the top-flight in 2018.
He has been a mainstay under Nuno Espirito Santo and has spent over ten years at the club since joining from Bohemians in 2010 for £75k.
Tottenham have agreed a deal worth around £15m and he will become the club’s fourth summer signing alongside fellow new boys Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Alfie Devine and Joe Hart.
Doherty was Jose Mourinho’s top target at right-back and is equally as comfortable at wing-back, where he flourished for Wolves.

There has been huge surprise that the Black Country club were willing to let the 28-year-old leave for just £15m.
However, Nuno and the owners agreed that this may be the right time to part company with the player as they eye a replacement in the form of versatile Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
It has now emerged that Manchester United enquired about a deal for Doherty last summer.
According to the Daily Mail’s Ian Ladyman, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a move for Doherty before signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Doherty is said to have been persuaded to stay another year at Wolves as they went on to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.
United went on to sign Wan-Bissaka in a £45m deal from Crystal Palace following his remarkable rise to prominence in south London.
Doherty has been on holiday in Sardinia following the 1-0 defeat to Sevilla but has now returned to the UK to clinch his move to Tottenham.
He is set to undergo a medical this weekend before joining up with Stephen Kenny’s Ireland squad ahead of Nations League matches with Bulgaria and Finland.
