Man Utd may have Jadon Sancho transfer leverage after latest reports from Germany

Manchester United could be in the driving seat when it comes to signing Jadon Sancho next season, reports suggest. United were desperate to sign Sancho during the Summer transfer window, but were unable to seal the deal.

Sancho was United’s top target during the summer transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer determined to sign the forward.

United were tracking the wonderkid throughout last season, and made him their top target ahead of the window.

The Borussia Dortmund teen was valued at £108million by the Bundesliga giants, who were unwilling to reduce their valuation.

United would pay nowhere near that, however, and spent the summer in a stand-off with Dortmund officials.

Despite failing to meet the £108m asking price by August 10th – the deadline put in place by Dortmund chiefs – they remained confident until late in the window.

Only when they saw another bid rejected did they start to move on and focus on other targets.

They remain interested in Sancho, but were warned they will face significant competition from elsewhere if they didn’t fork out for him this year.

But according to reports in Germany, United could have a secret advantage.

Sancho has started this season poorly, and has failed to recapture his form from last season.

The 20-year-old has failed to find the net from six Bundesliga games so far, though he’s provided three assists.

He scored in the Champions League against Zenit St-Petersburg, but was then benched for their next European game against Club Brugge.

But German publications have torn into his form, with BILD branding his dip as ‘farewell form’.

Sancho was reportedly happy to stay at Dortmund this season, and wasn’t in any rush to push for a move to United.

On the contrary, he is said to have been a bit offended by their contract offers – which were lower than his current Dortmund deal – and would have questioned why they delayed their approach if they tried to sign him in the final stages of the window.

The same report from BILD claims his average speed has reduced, in a hint that he’s lost some of his sharpness on the pitch.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has insisted he isn’t concerned about Sancho’s form, reminding critics of the winger’s youth.

He said: “Jadon has always shown consistent performance.

“If this has not been at the top level we are used to for three months, we have to admit that to a 20-year-old. I’m not worried about that.”

It has also been speculated that Sancho is purposefully playing poorly in order to drive his asking price down to force through a move to United next year.

Sancho is still under contract until 2023, but with Dortmund alarmed over his lack of form, United could have the upper hand next year.
