Martinez steps up return but Rashford, Martial miss Man Utd training
Manchester United don’t expect Mason Greenwood to play for the club again after performing a U-turn on his reintegration in the summer. But there is reportedly a desire to generate a transfer fee for a player who has been at Old Trafford for over 15 years, and the time to do that is running thin.
Greenwood and United’s football figures, including Erik ten Hag, Richard Arnold and John Murtough, expected him to return this season.
But a wave of intense internal and external backlash over the leaked plans forced then-chief executive Arnold to perform a dramatic U-turn.
It saw Greenwood hurried out on transfer deadline day, joining La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan to get his career back on track.
The 22-year-old forward has been getting back up to speed in Spain, registering four goals and three assists in 13 appearances.
And Lazio, among the clubs circling in the summer, have reportedly paid attention to his progress, fuelling a desire to reignite their interest.
The Serie A outfit were confident of sealing a deal for Greenwood before running out of time, helping Getafe pounce for his signature.

Lazio may have been his first-choice destination, given they are three points outside the European places and have already progressed into the Champions League knockout stages.
And according to La Lazio Siamo Noi, club president Claudio Lotito is obsessed with taking Greenwood to Rome after struggling to overcome the failed summer pursuit.
It’s claimed Lazio could attempt to sign Greenwood in January by convincing United to terminate his loan at Getafe.
The report adds that Biancocelesti could lure him away by offering an option or obligation to make an initial loan permanent next summer for around £13million.

United may be interested in the proposal, considering the Old Trafford giants only have three more transfer windows to cash in on Greenwood before his 2025 contract expiry.
However, Getafe are said to also want the former Red Devils No 11 on a permanent basis next summer and would resist any efforts to take him away mid-season.
Greenwood was valued at a staggering £152m while making his teenage breakthrough at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, scoring goals at an impressive rate as a right winger and striker.
But United will have to accept a significantly lower fee if they don’t plan on handing him the opportunity to resume his career in M16 and could cut ties as early as next month.
