Man Utd pitch invader who celebrated with Rooney has finally paid off his fine

The infamous Manchester United pitch invader who jumped on Wayne Rooney has finally paid off his fine.

United took on Rangers at the Ibrox in a Champions League group stage game back in November 2010. On that occasion, the Red Devils scored late on to seal the game and progress to the last-16, thanks to an 87th minute penalty converted by Rooney.

But while the United striker celebrated passionately, a 23-year-old fan named Ian O’Donoghue ran onto the Ibrox turf and gave the Englishman a hug from behind. And if that wasn’t enough, the Irishman grabbed the face of Rooney while planting a firm kiss on the back of his head.

Incredibly, the offender was a centre-forward himself in the Republic of Ireland, who had made his way to Glasgow for the fixture. Yet he suffered the consequences as he was apprehended by police and stewards after making his way back to the Edmiston Road stand.

Following a court appearance, O’Donoghue was hit with a fine and a two-year ban from UK football matches. And after 13 years, he took to Twitter on Saturday (November 25) to reveal he had only just paid off the fine he received for his moment of madness.

"13 years. Finally got that fine paid off," he tweeted before tagging the current Birmingham City manager.

The extent of the fine handed out is unknown, though fans were stunned at just how long it has taken. “Quid a month lad?” one Twitter user joked.

A second tweeted: “You been paying £2.50 a month or something?” while a third added: “Definitely was worth every penny, wasn’t it?”

Others joked that Rooney, with his vast wealth, should have covered the man’s fine to spare him over a decade worth of payments, saying: “Rooney should've just paid this for you.”
