Man Utd set for transfer windfall as club lowers asking price to free funds for Sancho bid

Manchester United are set for their first bit of business on transfer deadline day, with Chris Smalling set to sign for Roma in a deal worth £13million. Reports in Italy claim the defender is set to join Roma today after enjoying a successful loan spell last season.

Smalling has been expected to leave United throughout the summer.

The defender hasn’t been involved for the Red Devils this season amid constant speculation over his future.

Roma have been eager to sign him throughout the summer after he impressed while on loan last year.

Smalling was ever-present for Roma last year, and played some of the best football of his career.

His loan spell ended without any permanent agreement, but Roma have been trying to agree a fee throughout the summer.

United originally demanded a fee in the region of £20m to let the 30-year-old leave, but now appear to have lowered their demands.

Speaking on Sunday, Roma’s global Sporting Officer, Manolo Zubiria, conrimed that the club wouldn’t give up on signing the centre-back.

He said: ”Smalling? Roma did everything possible to try and do a sustainable operation for the club.

Now, reports in Italy say United have agreed a fee of £13m to let Smalling go, and the defender will now fly to Rome to put pen to paper.

United are expected to use today’s transfer deadline day to try and get a deal over the line for Jadon Sancho.

The Borussia Dortmund winger remains United’s top target, but the Red Devils know they’ll have to pay £108m for his services.

Alex Telles is expected to fly to Manchester today to finalise his transfer from Porto, after United agreed to pay £18m to sign him.

United are also expected to confirm the signing of Edinson Cavani today after the former Paris Saint-Germain striker agreed a two-year contract worth £220,000-per-week.

If a deal for Sancho can’t be reached due to United’s reluctance to meet his asking price, Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele remains an alternative target.

The Catalans are expected to try and offload the French winger after wrapping up a deal for Memphis Depay.
