United’s standards plummetted shortly after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement ended a 27-year-old reign of sporting discipline and success.
It has led to four unsuccessful managerial tenures – five including Ralf Rangnick’s nightmare interim stint – and a sixth potentially loading in Erik ten Hag.
Reports of coaches losing the dressing room weeks or months before their dismissal have become standard practice across a decade of mediocrity.
And they have now arrived for Ten Hag, who is said to be battling to retain his squad’s support amid a disastrous second season in charge.
The Dutchman’s treatment of Jadon Sancho is among the aspects of his reign that some players aren’t happy about.
After excluding Sancho from United’s travelling squad at Arsenal in September, citing the reason for poor training performance, the 23-year-old effectively accused him of lying on social media.

Ten Hag has reportedly blocked his return until he offers an apology, which hasn’t arrived. Sancho now looks set to leave in January.
Matic has claimed his attitude problems were present before Ten Hag arrived in a damning revelation about the lack of professionalism during his five-year spell at United.
“At Chelsea, players acted professionally, they were punctual and were never late for training, but at United, it happened almost every day,” Matic told YuPlanet.
“Among the players who would always be late were Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho and a couple of other players.”

And Matic, who left Old Trafford as a free agent before Ten Hag got to work last summer, admitted that United stars paid a staggering £75,000 in fines across just one season for poor punctuality.
He added: “The rest of us who were always on time were angry, so we decided to form a kind of an internal disciplinary committee with me serving as its president.
“I put a sheet of paper up on the wall where I documented the names of individuals arriving late. During one particular season, we collected around £75,000 in fines.
“We had planned to use the money to throw a party in London, but we didn’t due to the Covid outbreak.”
