Man Utd targeting Dries Martens free transfer despite staggering £250m warchest

Manchester United will reportedly give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer £250m to rebuild his squad but the Norwegian’s first signing could be Dries Mertens on a free.

The Napoli forward’s contract talks have stalled and, according to a report from TuttoMercatoWeb , United are among the clubs interested in the Belgian.

Mertens’ current deal expires at the end of the season, meaning he could sign a pre-agreement with a foreign club in January.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of attacking recruits after letting both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez join Inter Milan without signing a replacement and getting Mertens for free would be excellent business.

The 32-year-old can play central or out wide and has scored 66 goals in 122 Serie A appearances since Maurizio Sarri converted him into a prolific forward.

However, United will face competition from Borussia Dortmund and Inter for Mertens’ signature.

Should they miss out on the Belgian, Solskjaer will have the funds to look elsewhere, with the Sun reporting club chiefs will hand him £250m in the summer.

“We are going to strengthen,” the Norwegian recently said. “We are going to get starters into this team — we need to.

“We are one or two players down in numbers. But it doesn’t have to be this window, it might be the summer window.”
