This summer transfer window will be a pivotal one for Manchester United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have shown real signs of improvement over the last few months, but reinforcements will be required for the Reds to take the next step in their development as a team.
As always, countless players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Solskjaer seemingly most keen on a new right winger and central midfielder. Speculation continues to swirl and it will continue to do so until the window is closed.
Here are four of today’s biggest and most intriguing United transfer stories.
United preparing cash-plus-players offer to lure Messi
News of Lionel Messi’s unhappiness at Barcelona has put a number of clubs on red alert – none more so than United, according to a report in the player’s native Argentina.
Varsity Sports (via Football365) claim the Old Trafford outfit are prepared to offer “one or two players” plus a cash fee of €120million (£108m) to lure Messi from the Camp Nou this summer, with the 33-year-old facing a career crossroads.
Paris Saint-Germain are also believed to be interested in Messi, although Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has poured cold water on the notion the number 10 could be about to leave the Catalan club.
“We are negotiating with many players but Messi has explained to us he wants to stay,” he said (via BBC Sport). “And so we’re going to enjoy him for much longer.”
Sancho edging closer to United summer move
It has become one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer, with no end in sight for the story yet, but Jadon Sancho is reportedly edging closer to signing for United this summer.
Solskjaer’s interest in the Borussia Dortmund winger is well documented, with Sancho seen as the perfect solution to United’s problems on the right side of their attack.
The Bundesliga outfit initially valued the 20-year-old at £100m-plus, with the Reds recently making clear they are unwilling to pay more than £50m, but Sancho might now be moving closer to Old Trafford.
Journalist Sam Pilger tweeted that the player is keen on a move to United, with a lack of an agreement between the two clubs now the only thing stopping a deal from happening.
Koulibaly on four-man defensive shortlist
United have identified four potential defensive targets for the summer window, with Kalidou Koulibaly among those shortlisted by the Old Trafford club.
The Independent (via the Daily Star) claim United aren’t just interested in Sancho this summer, but also want to sign a striker, another central midfielder and a new centre-back.
RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Swansea City’s Joe Rodon are thought to be on the list of potential defensive targets, with the latter likely to be the cheapest option.
United to rival Liverpool for Wolves winger
United are planning on joining the pursuit of Adama Traore, with the Wolves winger also believed to be attracting the attention of Liverpool this summer.
Sancho remains the Reds’ number one target as they look to find a right-sided attacker ahead of the 2020/21 season, but Traore could reportedly be an alternative option if they fail in that pursuit.

Journalist Duncan Castles (via Team Talk) claims United might now focus on Traore, with Borussia Dortmund's price tag for Sancho still viewed as excessive by the the Premier League club.
