Man Utd’s ‘crazy negotiations’ for Amad Traore lasted one year before transfer

Atalanta president Antonio Percassi has opened up on the “crazy negotiations” that took place with Manchester United over £36million star Amad Traore.

United secured a deal to sign Traore late on transfer deadline day last Monday, although the 18-year-old winger will not join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side until January.

The move came as a surprise given their lengthy pursuit of Jadon Sancho throughout the summer window, which proved unsuccessful due to Borussia Dortmund refusing to budge on their £108million asking price.

Dortmund are understood to have rejected a £90million offer from the Red Devils for Sancho, meaning they instead turned their attention to a deal for Traore at the last minute.

However, Atalanta chief Percassi has revealed United were actually in negotiations over a deal to sign the Ivorian for the best part of a year.

“The negotiation with Manchester lasted almost a year,” he said in an interview with Italian outlet L’Eco di Bergamo.

“The details and the scenarios are crazy. Meeting after meeting we learned unimaginable things.

“This leads to the growth of the club and enriches the work of everyone, from the general manager, Umberto Marino, to the entire staff.”

Percassi then shed light on exactly when United made their first approach for Traore, adding: “A few days after the Youth League game against Manchester City, the other Manchester contacted us.

“They had followed him, the real negotiation started. We went twice to England. The text of the final agreement is a contractual masterpiece.

“The professionals involved in the operation are of a high level. In terms of negotiations, we have learned a lot. And it is above all thanks to [son and Atalanta CEO] Luca’s work that we arrived at the final figures.”

Traore was not the only player who sealed a move to United on transfer deadline day, with Uruguayan youngster Facundo Pellistri joining in a £9million switch from Penarol.

Edinson Cavani completed a free switch to Old Trafford after leaving Paris St-Germain earlier this summer, while Alex Telles secured a £15million move from Porto.
