Manchester United make Boubakary Soumare transfer decision with scouts impressed

Man Utd: Solskjaer previews upcoming Liverpool clash

Manchester United won’t be signing Lille star Boubakary Soumare in the January transfer window, according to reports. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, despite the Norwegian being well-stocked in that department. However, it’s possible the Red Devils will opt to pursue the 21-year-old in the summer instead.

Manchester United are flying at present.

They looked a club in crisis after defeats to Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Arsenal earlier in the campaign but, since then, they’ve been resurgent.

United will travel to Liverpool on Sunday looking to open up a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, having beaten Burnley 1-0 in midweek.

With the club flying, prospects of Ed Woodward getting the chequebook out in the New Year appear slim.

And The Athletic say United have decided not to sign Soumare this January, despite scouts being impressed by the Lille star.

The 21-year-old has made 16 Ligue 1 matches this term, helping his side to third in the table behind Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain.

But while United have been keeping tabs on the Frenchman, they appear content with what they’ve currently got.

Solskjaer is blessed with options over at Old Trafford.

He’s got Bruno Fernandes as the spearhead of his midfield, with the Portugal international sparkling ever since his move from Sporting Lisbon last year.

Paul Pogba is back in the form of his life, recently scoring the winner against Burnley to send his side top of the league.

Fred and Scott McTominay are both valuable assets for Solskjaer, often starting the biggest matches.

And United also have Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek on their books, with the pair currently squad players for Solskjaer.

Regarding outgoings this winter, several could depart.

Tim Fosu-Mensah has already left, with the Netherlands international sealing a £1.8million move to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Solskjaer has given Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo his blessing to leave.

And United could cut Jesse Lingard loose, though wouldn’t be unhappy if the England international was to remain at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer recently played down talk of United making signings this month, saying: “I think that the signings we made in the summer strengthened the squad really well.

“Good characters, good signings, good players.

“January is always difficult, but if something comes up that you think is a long-term target anyway, that’s another scenario.

“But not many teams would be willing to lose their players in January.

“[It’s] unlikely that something will happen on the in side, but there might be two or three going out.

“They deserve to play more football for their own good and for their own careers.”

United are next in action against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday (4.30pm).

And they’ll be looking to avoid a repeat of what happened last season, when goals from Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds all three points.
