Manchester United have submitted an opening bid to sign Marc Cucurella on loan from Chelsea.
Chelsea news, exclusives and analysis
The Spaniard is out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino and is free to leave Stamford Bridge.
United have identified the 25-year-old as a solution to their problems at left-back.
Luke Shaw is out for two months with a muscular injury, while Tyrell Malacia remains sidelined.
United’s offered is believed to be for a season-long loan, according to the Athletic.
Chelsea are said to have responded to the offer but their response is unclear.
The two sides are contunuing negotiations and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be open to a permanent exit.
The two clubs have already dealt with one another this summer after agreeing a £55m deal for Mason Mount.
Ten Hag feels Cucurella, who can also play at left centre-back in a back three, is the best option available to United at this present time.
The club have looked at Nicolas Tagliafico and Marcos Alonso, but Cucurella is Ten Hag’s choice.
