Football Digest: Analysing Man Utd's failed recruitment
Mason Greenwood could reportedly be set to rebuild his career in a little-known European league when he leaves Manchester United. The 21-year-old will soon exit Old Trafford, either on loan or permanently, after it was confirmed on Monday that he will not be reintegrated into Erik ten Hag’s squad.
The finer details of Greenwood’s departure are still under consideration, with United committed to supporting him in his efforts to find a new team. The options currently on the table include a permanent sale, a loan exit or a mutual termination of his £75,000-per-week contract, which is set to run until the summer of 2025.
It seems as though Greenwood could be offered a route back into football in eastern Europe, with talkSPORT reporting that an unnamed Albanian club are interested in signing the forward. He would be the third English player after former Liverpool striker Michael Ngoo and retired winger Jamie Phoenix to move to the country if he ends up making the switch.
Albanian football has experienced a decline in recent years, with the nation’s top flight currently sitting at 47th in UEFA’s coefficient rankings. The league has just one team, Partizani, participating in Europe this year as they aim to get through the Europa Conference League qualifying stages.

The most valuable player in the Albanian league, known as the Abissnet Superiore, is Erion Hoxhallari following his move to Tirana from Romanian side Arad earlier this summer. The defender is valued at just £550,000 by Transfermarkt and returned to Tirana on a free transfer in July, a year and two days after initially leaving the club.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if Greenwood will end up moving to Albania in his bid to resume his football career. He was recently linked with a potential switch to Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, but manager Steven Gerrard was quick to brand the speculation ‘fake news’ on social media.

Roma were also mentioned in connection with a move for Greenwood but the Italian side are now said to have distanced themselves from the idea of signing him. It has been reported that another two clubs in the Championship have rejected the chance to land Greenwood since United announced that he would be leaving Old Trafford.
Greenwood is thought to favour a move to another English team but it seems likely that a switch overseas will now be his only option. He joined United at the age of six and has registered 129 senior appearances for the Red Devils since making his professional debut for the club four years ago.
