Mason Greenwood tears Atletico apart as Griezmann says they ‘couldn’t stop him’

Antoine Griezmann has heaped praise on Mason Greenwood following Atletico Madrid's 3-3 draw with Getafe.

The former Barcelona man claimed his side "couldn't stop" the Englishman as he inspired a late Getafe comeback. Greenwood didn't get on the scoresheet but ran the show as his side came from 3-1 down to snatch a point at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Speaking after the game, Griezmann said: "Greenwood hurt us a lot, we couldn't stop him at the end of the game and two goals came." The World Cup winner opened the scoring for Atletico right on half time, a few minutes after team-mate and former Manchester City ace Stefan Savic was sent off.

Borja Mayoral equalised for Getafe after the break, but ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata restored Atletico's lead before Griezmann added another to seemingly put the game beyond the visitors. But a Greenwood-powered fightback shifted momentum in the game and late strikes from Mayoral and Oscar Rodriguez levelled the tie.

The result means Atletico have won just one of their last four La Liga games and sees them slip to nine points behind surprise pace-setters Girona. Meanwhile, Getafe are eighth in the table and nine points off a Champions League spot.

Manchester United loaned Greenwood, 22, to Getafe in September after concluding an internal investigation into criminal charges, which were dropped earlier this year, brought against him in 2022. He's scored five goals in 15 games and has been one of Getafe's standout stars so far this season.

United confirmed in August that the forward would never play for the club again, but pledged to work with him to find him a new club. He's expected to be sold in the summer, though the Red Devils may decide to loan him out again as he's under contract at the club until 2025.
