Super-agent Jorge Mendes managed to broker a £133million summer transfer for Manchester United – but it was rejected.
The Red Devils left their transfer business late in the last window, with three players signing at Old Trafford on deadline day.
Fans were left feeling disappointed, though, as a £100m deal for top target Jadon Sancho failed to transpire.
But Spanish outlet Sport have reported that an eye-watering deal for a La Liga star came close for the club.
United were linked with a move for Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer willing to pay the 17-year-old’s £153m fee.
With the Spanish giants hit hard by Covid-19, Mendes took the opportunity to put a deal together worth €150m [£133m] for the forward who has already scored 13 goals in 45 games for the club.
But Barca “refused to assess the proposal”, despite describing it as a “dizzying” prospect for the club.
The report states this may not be the end, though, as the super agent is expected to bring the figures back to the Nou Camp team “in times of crisis” to put pressure on a sale.
Ronald Koeman did take steps to make it harder for United to sign Fati, though, by getting him to sign a new deal with a massive £365m release clause.
United’s summer business saw them bring Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek to the club for £40m from Ajax.
With no starts in the Premier League under Solskjaer, it has seen pundits criticise Ed Woodward for the transfer.
Former United defender Daley Blind said: "What was he (van de Beek) signed for?
"I listened to Solskjaer's press conference (on Friday) and he had nothing but praise for Donny. Yet, he did not even give him a brief cameo.
“He bought him to beef up the squad. Why not use that squad depth?"
But United could also make a move for young forward Eduardo Camavinga, despite being tied down to a contract with Rennes until 2022.
