Chelsea are nearing an agreement with defender Thiago Silva over a new contract, with the Brazil captain wanting to stay for another season.
The former AC Milan and PSG centre-half has impressed since his arrival from France, helping to lead Thomas Tuchel’s side to FA Cup and Champions League finals.
However, Silva’s season hasn’t all been plain sailing, missing a month with a thigh injury and getting sent off in the humiliating defeat to West Brom.
Tuchel has a plethora of options in the centre of defence, with Andreas Christiansen, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kurt Zouma all enjoying fine form at times this season.
Moreover, Fikayo Tomori will return to Chelsea this summer from Milan, while Silva’s former PSG teammate Marquinhos has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
Nonetheless, the new Chelsea boss has been sufficiently impressed with the 36-year-old, whose new deal will be announced soon.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Silva’s contract extension clause will be activated in the next couple of weeks to take his deal to the end of 2022.
Romano also posted on Twitter claiming that Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are next on Tuchel’s list of contract renewals but the club isn’t in any rush to start negotiations.
Jorginho was signed by ex-Blues boss Maurizio Sarri when he arrived in 2018, having teamed up to great effect at Napoli.
The Italian initially struggled to live up to his £50m price tag, but has found scoring form this term, netting seven times so far.
Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante has been a sensation since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, helping the Blues to the Premier League title in 2017, with FA Cup and Europa League triumphs in the following seasons.
