Erik ten Hag previews Man Utd's clash with Galatasaray in the Champions League
Former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas felt that Eddie Howe’s side were “absolutely robbed” after a late and controversial penalty saw them drop two points in their 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Tino Livramento was adjudged to have handled the ball with just a few minutes remaining, before Kylian Mbappe equalised from the spot after Alexander Isak’s first-half effort.
Livramento attempted to block Ousmane Dembele’s cross as PSG had swarmed the Newcastle penalty area. The ball hit his chest and then arm, prompting the referee to dismiss protests from the hosts who believed they deserved a penalty.
However, after being told by VAR to have a look at the incident on the pitchside monitor, the official changed his mind and pointed at the spot – much to the surprise of Newcastle’s players and Jenas as he launched into a furious rant at full-time. He was informed that UEFA’s rules state that unnaturally making your body bigger with an arm is deemed handball, but he disagreed with the decision.
Jenas fumed to TNT Sports: “The rule says ‘unnaturally bigger’? What does that even mean? That is one of the most disgraceful decisions I’ve seen in a long, long time. All of the energy, the heart, the passion those players have put into that performance and it comes down to a really shocking decision that the referee has made.
JUST IN Eddie Howe’s reaction to ‘disgraceful’ penalty call vs PSG speaks volumes[REACTION]
“It deflects off his body and onto his arm – not in any walk of life is that a penalty. It’s just not. You can clearly see it hits his chest, onto his arm, what is he supposed to do? Wrap them around his back? Seriously, I am fuming, I really am, because there’s that feeling that they’ve been cheated there tonight.
“Nick Pope has gone out there, made one of the best saves he’s ever made, might ever make, and it should’ve been one of those historical wins that leads them into this last game against AC Milan. But they’ve been robbed, absolutely robbed.”

Jenas brought up another incident earlier in the match, in which the ball bounced off teenager Lewis Miley’s body before hitting his hand and the officials opted against penalising the Newcastle starlet.
“The decisions aren’t similar – they’re exactly the same,” Jenas explained. “The ball bounces up off his quad and onto his arm. That went to VAR, they decided that isn’t a penalty.
“I don’t get how they can look at one incident and then the other and say they’re different – it’s complete negligence to the game and what the players deserve. I’m so frustrated I can’t even get my words out! It’s a shocker.”
