Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘has been on to’ Man Utd players over goalscoring chances

Luke Shaw has revealed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been “onto” the Manchester United squad about taking their goalscoring opportunities.

United lost 1-0 to Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, despite being the better side for most of the game, missing a number of chances.

Several players put in impressive performances, such as Daniel James and Donny van de Beek.

And ahead of their first Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday, Shaw admits that Solskjaer has been getting down to business in training.

"We've struggled a lot at that at times, when we create opportunities but sometimes we don't find the back of the net," Shaw told MUTV after the Villa game.

"The manager is really onto the players about that, he's keen to brief that in training as someone who has the experience he has.

"We had a lot of players out today [Saturday], a lot of young lads who haven't even trained with us but who have taken their chance. Hopefully we can get together on Monday and, like I said, we'd be ready for Palace."

With United participating in the Europa League mini-tournament last month, their pre-season preparations have been extremely short compared to usual.

And Shaw says that ahead of their first real training session as a group on Monday, United are targeting a trophy-laden season.

"It's a very weird feeling, it doesn't feel like I've had much [time] off. I haven't to be honest," he added.

"But this is life and sometimes we need to be ready for whatever happens and this is one of those scenarios.

"We've got a lot of world class players coming back so we're looking forward to getting back together on Monday.

"We need to be strong this season and focus on winning trophies, not getting into the top four, because a club like us should be winning trophies."
