Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel is adamant the club should not appoint an interim manager following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United relieved Solskjaer of his duties on Sunday following a run of one win in seven Premier League matches. Michael Carrick has taken caretaker charge and won his first game against Villarreal on Tuesday.

United have announced they are planning to bring in an interim manager until the end of the season.

Former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde and ex-RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick have been linked with a temporary role.

That is if United cannot prise Mauricio Pochettino away from Paris Saint-Germain mid-season, with the former Tottenham boss their No 1 target.

But Schmeichel says he is confused about United’s plan to only appoint an interim with well over half of the season still remaining.

He told talkSPORT: “Hopefully now it is an opportunity to get things right.

“I hope there’s a lot of hard work going into the due-diligence now in terms of who will be the next guy.

“I’m a bit confused about the communication that comes out of Man United. This idea about an interim manager up until the summer and then somebody else from there.

“If I’m honest I hope that the next manager will be in place before an interim manager.

“I don’t think the club needs to have that kind of confusion.”

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho led Carrick to victory in his first match in charge in the Champions League.

Carrick would do his chances of getting a longer-term role no harm if United were to continue winning during his reign.

But Schmeichel believes there is too much similarity to previous boss Solskjaer after Carrick worked alongside the Norwegian.

Schmeichel added: “I think what the team more than anything needs is new voices in the dressing room, something different, another kind of inspiration. Even Michael Carrick said that.

“He worked with Ole Gunnar for so long and he’s going to be the same. So that’s probably not what the team needs.

“But he did really well in Villarreal but it’s just one game.

“I think it’s very important that we get a manager in place and then we can start to look to the future.”
