Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood dropped from England squad for Denmark clash

Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood have been dropped for the Nations League trip to Denmark by England boss Gareth Southgate.

The Three Lions boss confirmed that the pair both broke coronavirus guidelines during the team's stay in Iceland, meaning that they now cannot interact with the rest of the squad.

"Unfortunately this morning it was brought to my attention that two boys have broken the Covid guidelines in terms of our secure bubble and so we had to decide very quickly that they couldn’t have any interaction with the team," said Southgate during his press conference on Monday.

"They wouldn’t be able to travel to training and given the procedures we have to follow now they have to travel back to England separately."

Manchester City midfelder Foden started Saturday's 1-0 victory over Iceland in what was his first senior appearance for the Three Lions.

Forward Greenwood, of Manchester United also made his first senior appearance for his country when he came on as substitute in Reykjavik.

DV states that England's players have been under strict rules during their time in Iceland, which included some exemptions for elite sports.

The outlet reported that: “According to the terms of the exemption, the players were not to meet anyone outside of their own team members outside of the field and were only allowed to go to practices and games.

“The rules the players were subject to have been confirmed by KSI, Iceland’s national Football Federation.

"According to DV’s source, the players were not even allowed to meet their families.”

The pair are now set to be left behind in Iceland while the England team head to Copenhagen for Tuesday's next Nations League match.

England boss Southgate is due to speak to the media on Monday when he will confirm that both the Manchester-based pair will be sent home.
