Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard reviews Forest draw
Mauricio Pochettino is in agreement with Frank Lampard that Chelsea should sign Declan Rice. The England international is set to be at the heart of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer, with the Blues’ renewed interest potentially set to jeopardise Arsenal’s plans.
Rice has shone at West Ham over the past few years, annually being linked with a move away from the club. Though several rejected contract offers has forced the Hammers to be resigned to losing their captain this summer, with interest from several Premier League clubs.
Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are all in the frame to land the 24-year-old. Though 90min report that Pochettino has arrived at the Stamford Bridge dugout with the intention of signing Rice as well in order to bolster his midfield ranks.
The soon-to-be manager is desperate to work with the Hammers’ skipper and does not want the club to cool their long-standing interest, dating back several years. Arsenal are reportedly in pole position to sign Rice and there is an aura of confidence at the Emirates Stadium that they will land the midfielder – with the intention of replacing Granit Xhaka – though Pochettino will be hoping that he can work his magic on the situation.
Chelsea may have to pay £100m for Moises Caicedo due to Arsenal and Liverpool[LATEST]
Chelsea have attempted to sign Rice on several occasions, having previously released him from their academy, with their strongest push coming when Lampard was their manager. Speaking in 2021, the now-interim explained: “We are fortunate to have him in England. West Ham are fortunate to have him. He’s a leader and it is clear that he’s destined for great things.
“I have probably given it away with how I spoke about him, but I think it’s common knowledge that I was a big fan of his. It didn’t happen for various reasons, but we brought in a lot of players in the summer. But I was a big fan of him. For understandable reasons, West Ham know the player that they have on their hands.
“I don’t want Declan to be in an uncomfortable position through this because all I see from him is absolute performance and desire to play for West Ham. They gave him the chance there and the choice will be Declan’s as the years go ahead, but his performances are great to watch.”
Chelsea could also derail Arsenal’s transfer plans further if they renew their interest in Brighton star Moises Caicedo. Both clubs saw bids for the Ecuador international rejected in January, though the Seagulls have been clear that they are more willing to entertain offers in the summer transfer window.
