Everton manager Rafa Benitez has called on the club to be ‘ambitious’ in the transfer window as he continues preparations for his first season at the helm. The Spaniard has suggested that some players will leave in order to help free up space to improve his squad.

Benitez’s appointment as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Goodison Park is just as exciting as it is controversial.

Many Everton fans have shared their displeasure with the decision due to the 61-year-old’s past success with Liverpool.

Benitez called Everton a ‘small club’ after a Merseyside derby in 2007, but he enters the hot seat hoping time will heal.

The Toffees are yet to show a great deal of activity in the summer transfer window, but he recently opened up about the club’s dealings.

Benitez shed light on his transfer plans and explained that whilst considering Financial Fair Play, Everton must show ambition.

It’s perhaps a hint that he’d like the club to financially back him in his first summer as manager, something he didn’t receive at Newcastle United.

He said: “Depending a lot on the financial situation because Financial Fair Play is there. You have to follow these rules, but we have to bring what we need.

“We have to be ambitious, but at the same time, we have to manage the situation.

“We maybe have some players that have to leave. If they leave, it will give us more chances to approach other players and improve the squad.”

As Everton’s pre-season continues, Benitez also praised Dominic Calvert-Lewin but insisted that he needs improved service.

“It is very easy to see that we have a great centre-forward [in Calvert-Lewin],” Benitez explained.

“He’s very good in the air; he can score goals. But we have to provide him with good crosses, good passes.

“We can improve in these areas and, from the wide areas, the crosses will come. When we can do that, the team will be a little bit better.

Everton face Colombian outfit Millonairos in the Florida Cup later this month, before a potential final against Arsenal or Inter Milan.

The Toffees then travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United before the competitive season gets underway.

Benitez’s reign begins with a home game against Southampton on Saturday, 14 August.
