Burnley v Man Utd: Pictures
Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund cost Jonny Evans a first Red Devils goal in nine years on Saturday night after the Northern Ireland international had a header ruled out against Burnley following a VAR check. United signed Evans for a second time in the summer after the defender left Leicester.
United returned to domestic action at Turf Moor following their 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek as boss Erik ten Hag tasked his side with turning their early season poor form around. The 13-time Premier League champions underwhelmed during August, despite winning two of their three matches, and then suffered back-to-back losses to Arsenal and Brighton earlier in September.
United attempted to make an early breakthrough at Burnley as they looked to close the gap on the teams in the top four. And they thought they had their breakthrough midway through the opening period as Evans rose highest to head home Sergio Reguilon’s corner.
But Hojlund was standing directly in front of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as the ball sailed into the goal, and referee Tony Harrington was asked to go over to the VAR monitor for a check. After reviewing the incident, Harrington decided that Hojlund, who was standing in an offside position, had interfered with play by obstructing Trafford’s view – and the goal was chalked off.

Evans returned to Old Trafford to train with United in the summer eight years after leaving the club to sign for West Brom. The 35-year-old was handed gametime during pre-season and put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal at the end of the transfer window.
The centre-back featured for six minutes when United were defeated 3-1 by Arsenal at the start of the month. And he was a surprise inclusion in Ten Hag’s starting team for the trip to Burnley, with Lisandro Martinez ruled out and Raphael Varane only deemed fit enough for the bench.

Evans last found the back of the net for United in January 2014 when he scored in an encounter with Sunderland. And the defender will have been bitterly disappointed that his header against the Clarets was ruled out. But the veteran didn’t have to wait long to get involved in a goal as he provided an exquisite pass for Bruno Fernandes to volley the ball into the bottom corner of the net just before half-time.
United will have been pleased by their efforts in the opening period against Vincent Kompany’s men. And the reigning Carabao Cup champions went into the break 1-0 up.
