Reece James to MISS Chelsea's game with Leeds today

Reece James will MISS Chelsea’s game with Leeds today after the Blues confirmed he has been ruled out with a tight hamstring… as Graham Potter is dealt a major blow ahead of his side’s must-win match

  • James is struggling with a tight hamstring and won’t be risked this afternoon
  • Chelsea are hopeful he will return against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday

Chelsea have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their must-win clash with Leeds this afternoon after the club confirmed that right-back Reece James will miss out with a hamstring injury.

James emerged as a doubt on Friday after Graham Potter revealed at his press conference that the 23-year-old has been struggling with tightness in his hamstring.

Potter has now revealed that James will play no part in Saturday’s game, but is optimistic that he will be available when Chelsea host Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

‘Reece is feeling a bit of tightness which is sometimes understandable coming back from injury. We have been assessing him this week and feel it is too soon for the game today,’ Potter told Chelsea’s official website.

‘There is a strong chance he will be available for Tuesday [against Borussia Dortmund] but this game comes too soon.’

Reece James will not be available for Chelsea’s clash with Leeds this afternoon

James being unavailable is a major blow for Chelsea’s under-fire manager Graham Potter

James has endured an injury-hit campaign which has meant that he has only played 11 league games this term for the Blues.

He suffered a knee injury in October during Chelsea’s 2-0 win against AC Milan, and subsequently missed the World Cup in Qatar.

The full-back then had another setback in his first game back against Bournemouth in late December, and went on to miss over a month of action with a fresh knee issue.

He has started three of Chelsea’s last four games, and was given a rest against Southampton recently, but his fitness remains a concern following his latest injury blow.

Losing James for today’s match with Leeds is a cruel blow for Potter, whose side have only won one match in 2023.

Chelsea are continuing to stand by their under-fire boss, but it is understood that some of the club’s board are unsure that he is the right man to turn the team’s fortunes around.

The west London side have only won two of their 13 league matches without James this term, but Potter will need his players to step up and cope in his absence for today’s match which could go some way to determining his future at Stamford Bridge.
