Tottenham forward Richarlison has undergone surgery to deal with a long-standing injury problem.

The 26-year-old – who joined Spurs for a fee rising to £60million in the summer of 2022 – had played in all 10 of his side’s Premier League matches this season before he was an unused substitute during Monday’s chaotic 4-1 defeat to Chelsea.

The Brazilian has netted one goal and added three assists in what was a previously unbeaten start for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

However, on Thursday, Richarlison – who had been left out of Brazil’s squad for this month’s internationals – revealed on social media that he had undergone groin surgery to sort a problem he has been suffering with since the beginning of 2023.

Taking to Instagram with a photo from his hospital bed, he said: ‘Hey everyone! Today, I underwent surgery to correct a chronic issue I’ve been experiencing in the pubic region.

‘Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been dealing with unbearable pain, affecting my performance and joy on the field.

‘A few days ago, I decided it was time to prioritise my health, recover, and regain the physical condition for my best performance and, most importantly, to live without the pain I’ve been feeling.

‘Now, I’m heading home to rest a bit and kick off the recovery process. I know there will be challenging days without doing what I love most in life, but it wouldn’t be fair to myself, my club, and the national team to keep neglecting my health.

‘Very soon, I’ll be back, God willing, 100 per cent recovered and ready for the challenges ahead!

‘Thanks for all the messages of support, and a big shoutout to the club’s doctors for their attentive care! Cheers!’

Tottenham also confirmed Richarlison had undergone the groin surgery and sent their best wishes to the 26-year-old as they added on social media: ‘We can confirm that Richarlison has undergone groin surgery today.

‘The Brazil international will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately, before returning to training in the coming weeks. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Richy!’

Thursday’s news came after Mail Sport had reported earlier this week how Richarlison was set to undergo surgery following ‘eight months of suffering’ and just weeks after he bravely revealed his plan to seek help with his mental health.

‘The last few months haven’t been easy for me,’ Richarlison told ESPN Brazil on Monday. ‘I’ve also been suffering with my health.

‘I’ve already spoken to doctors and I’ll soon have surgery on my pubis.

Richarlison’s injury is another blow for Ange Postecoglou, who is already without several stars

‘I’ve been suffering for eight months, fighting for the national team and my club, and I didn’t look for me.

‘I think the time has come to rest, take a break. Let’s see the next few days, soon I’ll do what’s best for me.’

However, his absence will be another blow for Postecoglou, who will definitely be without Sergio Romero and Destiny Udogie for Saturday’s clash with Wolves due to suspension, while Micky van de Ven, Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon are expected to be absent for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, James Maddison – who limped off against Chelsea in the first half – and Ben Davies, are doubts for the game at Molineux.
