Chelsea won the Champions League in the 2020-2021 season after beating Manchester City

‘I think in the sense of arriving to the finals and having teams in the final of the Champions League and Europa League, yes,’ the midfielder said.

‘The same thing happened six years ago, it was the Spanish league with Real, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

‘I know the Premier League and it is getting stronger and stronger and stronger each time. I always say we have the small super league here in England, in the sense that we have amazing teams.’

The 24-year-old admitted that he did not speak to his family for days after Kai Havertz’s winner edged out City in Portugal.

But Rodri insisted that Pep Guardiola’s side are ready to go again as they kick off their campaign against RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

‘To win it is a dream for a lot of us but it is not compulsory,’ he added. ‘It is such an unbelievable tournament but only one team wins it.

‘I would sign right now to get into another final. It is not easy, it was the first time in our history and you have to do a lot of things to arrive in that situation.

‘You have three s*** days the next days, you cannot even talk to your families and friends. They are there to support you but your face is not as you want.

‘You move on and in defeat you learn more than in victories. The players adjust very fast and we can focus on the next goals. Football you play every three days so there is no chance to celebrate or cry.’
