Manchester United hero Paul Scholes has insisted that Bruno Fernandes is better than he was.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Red Devils back in January for an initial fee of £47m, and he has gone on to match and even surpass expectations with his goal and assist tallies.

The 26-year-old now has 26 goals and 16 assists in only 44 appearances for his new club, with his 10 league strikes this season pushing them to within five points of first-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.

Scholes, who is considered to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League era, has now stated that he believes Fernandes to be better than him, noting his performances as ‘sensational’.

“What's he's doing is phenomenal, really,” Scholes told United's Tunnel Insider show.

“I think if you look, since he’s been [here], United would be top of the league if they won their game in hand, with more points than Liverpool, which is strange to think really because they’ve had such a bad start to the season.

“Well, you thought it was a bad start to the season, but they’re still right in there and I think they can only get better.

“The numbers he’s produced are just ridiculous, let’s hope he carries on.”

“He’s better than me. He’s different to me,” Paul then added.

“He scores more goals than me, he creates more goals than me.

“I’d like to play with him, probably behind him would be alright. But no, he’s been sensational, a big difference.

“I think before he came to the team, United could hardly create a chance with some of the stuff they were playing, but now they look like they can score three, four or five goals every game.”

United take on Wolves on Tuesday with the chance of going second in the table, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is taking nothing for granted.

He said: “Well, we've had so many tight games against them.

“We are improving definitely, we're getting better and better at finding different solutions in different games.

“But we know that Wolverhampton have got quality as well and they will give us problems if we're too open. We've got a plan together.”
